Broken down shoes were a strange decision of subject for a work of art. A colleague of Van Gogh's in Paris depicted how he purchased old work shoes at a swap meet. Then he strolled through the mud in them until they were foul. Really at that time did he feel they were sufficiently intriguing to paint. Van Gogh made various still lifes of this subject.
